The Story Behind The Song
It was not long after September 11th that I got a phone call
from my writer-friend Nick Clemente. Inspired by the heroic
efforts that were made that day, Nick had written a set of
'patriotic' lyrics. He gave them to me to see what I
thought. I wasn't sure what to do with
them at first, as I was still shocked from witnessing the World
Trade Center events first-hand, and not at all thinking about
writing music at the time. It was
soon after that when my long-time co-writer Marc Hoffman and I
were asked to perform for the rescue workers at Ground Zero during
their dinner breaks at what used to be "Nino's"
restaurant. After entertaining and then spending time
with the NYPD and FDNY that evening, we were completely inspired
by the patriotism and selflessness that we saw from
them. Their tireless, round-the-clock efforts in
searching for victims' remains while battling a blaze that lasted
until early December 2001 is something you don't
forget. Needless to say, at that point, I knew what to
do with Nick's patriotic lyrics, and decided it was
time to go to work on a 'patriotic' track. I had a
music idea to go with Nick's lyrics and gave it to Marc for
his input, and to also help me bring the song to the next level. And
that's how "American Pride" came to be written...
The recording was done in
Marc's studio with a team of just myself and Marc recording all of
the instruments. (Well, mostly Marc playing all of the
instruments!) I'm a keyboard player so I did the keyboard
parts. Since we use "Digital
Performer", the tracks were then sent down to Nashville to
session guitarist Tim Calhoun for him to work
on. After the tracks came back to NYC,
just 2 three-hour sessions later, all vocals had been completed -
both lead and background. Marc mixed the track,
and off it went to Disc Makers
for mastering and replicating.
